An Ode to a Middle School Mindset

Here’s to the day you remembered where your home room was. Here’s to sitting wherever you want at lunch. Here’s to walking up to the front of school at 7:45am, and having your friend’s gush over your new shoes. Here’s to the math teacher who asked you to write a poem because they heard you like to write. Here’s to finding your favorite film adaptation of a book. Here’s to blasting your favorite song in your headphones on the walk home.

Middle school might be rough and semi-toxic, but there are things we should never let go of. I was introduced to my favorite book in middle school. I tried out for a state choir and had my first successful try out. I had my first date. I had my first traumatizing embarrassing moment. (Okay, maybe THAT ONE we can let go of.) I may have popped my first zit and had my first in-school suspension, but I also was open to learning. I hadn’t quite decided that I knew everything yet. I still had things to learn and was waiting for someone to teach me. I wanted a mentor. I wanted inspirations. Maybe, as an adult, I can take a trip to my middle school mindset and go back to the days when I let someone guide me.

Below is a photo set that focuses on the middle school gaze. Christian and I had a great time trying to recreate our younger years. From doing our homework before the bell rings, to throwing shade at the guy who laughed at us in gym class, we had a blast reminiscing. Of course, it ended with a couple of great shots dedicated to young friendship.
