Sing Your Heart Out

I asked some of our readers and contributors for their favorite feminist anthems.
Most of the songs speak for themselves, but there are some certain lyrics that stand out to me! Jam on, ladies.
Just A Girl, by No Doubt.

With sarcastic lyrics like, “I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite / So don’t let me have any rights,” Gwen Stefani hits the feminism nail on the head. Stefani understood, from her struggles and accomplishments within the ska world, that girls take a lot of SHIT. And, she’s gonna call you out on it!

Trick Me, by Kelis.

“Freedom to us has always been a trick / Freedom to you has always been whoever landed on your dick.”

Bad Girls by M.I.A.

“Looking in the rear view, swagger going swell / Leave them boys behind, kisses, leave ’em just to kill.” Check out all of this female empowerment!
Ampersand, by Amanda Palmer

This song tells a story about street harassment. Amanda, a strong, sex positive woman, uses her lyrics to ponder the idea of a woman actually agreeing to have sex with a cat-caller.
“Even if I went with you, I’m not the girl you think I am. I’m not gonna match you ’cause I’d lose my voice completely. I’m not gonna match you because I’m not the one that’s crazy.”
What’s your feminist anthem? What gets your girl power going?
